Micro-sites serve a pressing need in the face of ubiquitous mobile usage
A micro-site resides on the Internet and can be accessed by any browser-enabled phone with a data plan. No download is necessary. It is optimized for the features that the mobile browser/phone can support and the different screen sizes. Its speed depends on the mobile browsing capacity of the carrier network. A mobile micro-site is used to ensure an optimal user experience within the limitations of a mobile phone (think varying screen dimensions and differences in capabilities between a browser and a mobile browser especially when it comes to animation on websites that do not show on most mobile browsers).
When the user inputs an online URL into the mobile browser he will get access to an online website just as he would on a computer but with two major differences: (1) the website will appear very cluttered and jumbled since the screen size of the mobile cannot accommodate the website layout on the small screen, and (2), any animation will cause the mobile browser to show a blank screen since the mobile browser does not support animation. The solution to both problems is for the webmaster to invoke a re-direct from the regular website to the mobile micro-site. If the user of a mobile device tries to access a URL which has a re-direct in place he automatically is redirected to the mobile micro-site if the URL "senses" that is it being accessed by a mobile device.
In contrast to a mobile micro-site, a mobile application resides on the smart phone, has to be downloaded and can take advantage of the features of a particular smart phone brand. Its speed depends on the application architecture and access to the data that drives the application. Only mobile applications can be listed in most app stores. We can help you determine which approach is right for you.
Why does your company need a mobile micro-site?
If you are concerned about your company's revenue, please consider the following:
1. Cisco Systems estimates that mobile IP traffic will grow 66 times (6,600%) in the period 2008 -2013.
2. BizReport states that 90% of restaurants have a website and Yahoo estimates that 65% of U.S. companies currently have a website.
3. If you were your customer in this scenario, what would you be thinking?
Your customer is a typical, busy, on-the-go person in the shopping mall.
They want to give someone this great restaurant's name (your restaurant), address, etc. but they do not have the contact information. They try to get your restaurant’s contact information from your website on their mobile phone. The problem is this:
They get to your company website from their cell phone but, because you have no mobile micro-site your online website is not optimized for mobile. It is slow, it looks weird on the mobile phone, and it is frustrating to go through all those pages to get to the contact information, etc.
They go to the free online yellow or white pages but these are neither free nor easy and they are as frustrating as you online website.
They give up on using the mobile phone and promise to send the information from their computer when they get home. THEY FORGET IT WHEN THEY GET HOME!
What does this cost you each year in missed revenue opportunities?
4. The fact is that people want instant gratification when they use their cell phone (i.e. they want to talk to someone or they want to find some information and they want it NOW). If they are looking for information, they do not want to do research for very long (every click reduces the likelihood of completing the search by 50%.
5. A company's online website is not meant for instant gratification. It is more like a research instrument where users can find in-depth information about a company. When people use an online website, they usually have time to sift through multiple pages to find the one bit of information they are looking for.
6. A micro-site has to provide simple static things like a phone number, address, map, and pertinent information about the company. If a company is thinking about having a website, they should develop one with mobile traffic in mind.
